Pastor Barbara Marks' sermon "At the Crossroads" this Sunday, 1 November, will focus on the personal crossroads that she faced as God presented her with a higher calling to ministries. Sunday, 10AM, 44 Maynard Street. All Saint's Sunday commemoration and communion for all.

Parsonage/Office Open House - A Blessed Day

10/25/2015

Members, friends, and neighbors of First United Methodist Church, Middletown had a wonderful time on Saturday, October 24th, as we celebrated and blessed anew our property at 221 Ridge Road, currently in use as our church office and outreach center, and for many decades the parsonage for our congregation. Pastor Barbara Marks blessed the home, using a 1940-era Book of Worship, alongside Connecticut District Superintendent Ken Kieffer and the many people in attendance.

The home has been decorated very tastefully inside, with modern colors and fixtures complementing the classic designs of an American home, and highlighting some of the beautiful furnishings that are a part of our legacy. We are excited to be bringing this property into new service, and so very grateful for our trustees, for the construction team, and for everyone who contributed to the success of this great day through setup, food, fellowship, and cleanup.

Can You See Clearly Now?

If you're reading this right now, you are blessed with a precious gift - eyesight. To see is to experience not only what is illuminated, but a sense of social connectedness and worth. What was it like for the blind beggar Bartimaeus in Jericho to receive from Jesus the eyesight that we wanted so passionately? What were the hopes and dreams of an earlier life that had gone dark? And how do we move past our own darkness? This Sunday, Pastor Barbara Marks takes a look at this story from Mark 10:46-52 in her sermon, "I can see clearly now." 10 AM, 44 Maynard Street. See you there!

Habitat for Humanity Team Building Starts November 7th

10/17/2015

What happens when we commit to caring for our neighbors with radical hospitality? We change. Our community changes.

The world changes, in God's image of love.

Middlesex Habitat for Humanity is breaking ground for a two-home build on Summer St in Portland, CT on Saturday, October 24th, and will be scheduling work teams at the site throughout the months to follow.

First UMC Middletown is targeting joining a work team that will be on site Saturday, November 7th. We will be coordinating with work teams from Wesleyan University, and we are inviting other congregations in the area to participate on our team as well.

Building a home for a deserving family is a good way to bring God's love into the world; building two homes for two families, is a great way. One of these homes is being prepared for the benefit of a U.S. military veteran family in need. So, you'll be supporting people who have served our nation, also! The second unit's family is being discussed by the Habitat team now, and may possibly be a refugee family from a nation that has experienced destruction of homes in a war zone.

This is not glamorous work, as most faith work isn't, but it is very important work. Every board that gets cut, every hole that's dug, every nail that's pounded in makes not just a house, but a home built with love.

We hope that you'll consider joining us for this build - whoever you may be! See the additional information on this page for details.

How you can participate.

  • Join the build team, which will be on site Saturday, November 7th. There will be a variety of tasks to accomplish, some requiring moderate physical strength or basic skills with tools, but none of which require extraordinary strength and skills. Trained leaders will be available to guide you. Sturdy clothes and shoes recommended. Adults are suggested for the work, though teens may be able to participate with appropriate permission and waivers.
  • Support the build team, by supplying them with refreshments, encouragement, and recommendations for people who would be good build team members.
  • Support Middlesex Habitat for Humanity, with donations of money, items donated to their ReStore used goods outlet, or helping with volunteer work at ReStore.
  • Invite others to participate! We are a community oriented church, and we encourage our friends and members to invite others to join us in this project! Share with your friends this Web page or the poster below (PDF download).

For more information, please contact John Blossom at 203.293.8511, outreach@fumcmiddletownct.org. For more information on Middlesex Habitat for Humanity, please visit them at www.habitatmiddlesex.org.

What's happening with mission and outreach activities at First UMC Middletown? As we saw from the Sew 'n Sews announcement on Sunday, we are a community that is active in mission - and becoming more active. Below the photo in this post is a link to the latest planning document for these activities in our church community. An up to date copy of this report will be posted regularly here on our Web site.

As you have updates on your activities, please make sure that you communicate them to outreach@fumcmiddletownct.org, and to plan for making announcements at the opening of our worship services on Sundays. If you want to provide more details to people, you can get help to post that information on the Web site and in our weekly newsletter from the church office. If you need support for planning and organizing your activities, please contact John Blossom (203.293.8511) or Marsha Judson.

Come to our Open House, Saturday, October 24th

Our historic parsonage home at 221 Ridge Road has been undergoing extensive renovations, and it is being readied for a celebration of its re-commissioning to the service of our church and our community. It has been decorated very tastefully, and promises to serve us in new capacities for office functions, meetings, fellowship, worship, and more.

Please join us on Saturday, 24 October, 12 Noon - 3PM for an open house for both the public and church members to see its new look, to join in finger foods, fellowship, fun for the kids (pumpkin decorating!), possibly a bit of music (we hope!) - and, of course get to know neighbors who have been invited by fliers in their mailboxes.

If you'd like to help with the outreach to people you know, please share the following flier with them. See you there!

Who hears our cries? Are we ready to be heard?

When we think of the Bible story of Job, often we focus on Job's misery from what he had lost. But what about the things that he had gained from losing - like the ability to hear God, and God's love and mercy? Thus Sunday at First United Methodist Church, Middletown, Pastor Barbara Marks weaves together the story of Job with Jesus' confrontation of a rich man who wanted to know what it took to be a part of God's eternal life (Mark 10:17-31). 44 Maynard Street, 10AM, Crystal Ballroom. See you there!
