Music and Choir
The choir is an integral part of the church; creating beautiful music each week to lead the church in worship. They meet every Monday night at 7:30, and there are no requirements other that a willingness to serve. If you want to be a part of the choir here at FUMC, please contact the church office.
Our Historic Organ Restoration Project: Sacred music has been a vital part of our worship services since the foundation of our church. After our first two organs were destroyed by fires in 1885 and 1930, the dedicated members of our congregation came together again to fund the creation of our current pipe organ. It was constructed by the firm of George Kilgen & Sons, Inc. of St. Louis, and the initial dedication service was held on October 7, 1931.
Our Kilgen organ contains approximately 2,788 pipes and is divided into the great, choir, swell, and echo divisions. The great and choir divisions are to the left of the alter, the swell division is to the right of the alter, and the echo division is located behind the open wooden slats in the ceiling of our sanctuary to the right. Each pipe is intricately connected to the console in a series of relays that coordinate to produce the beautiful music we hear from the organ.
Regular maintenance is critical to produce this high-quality sound. While our organ still provides lovely music each Sunday, the past 80 years have caused many parts to wear down. Consequently, our church has created an Organ Restoration Committee in an attempt to determine the costs of refurbishing the instrument and developing methods to raise the funds needed to complete this project. Our first goal is to restore the great and choir divisions and will cost approximately $162,000. So far, we have reached 56% of this goal. We warmly welcome any ideas for concerts or other fundraising efforts you might have for us. Your generous donations are helping us move towards this goal. Thank you!
